What Is the RYA Personal Watercraft Proficiency Course?

The RYA Personal Watercraft Proficiency (PWC) course is the gold-standard, one-day practical qualification for anyone who wants to ride a jet ski safely and legally.

Created by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) — the world’s leading boating authority — this course teaches you everything from basic controls to advanced handling, collision avoidance, and responsible riding.

It’s the exact same qualification used by superyacht captains, charter companies, and harbour authorities worldwide. Many ports and marinas (especially in Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean) will not let you launch a jetski without it.

You also receive the official RYA Personal Watercraft Handbook (G35) — your permanent reference guide for safe riding anywhere in the world.

What You’ll Learn – Full RYA Syllabus (Theory + On-Water)

Morning – Shore-based Theory & Craft Familiarisation

  • Weather, tides and passage planning

  • Buoyage, orientation at sea and essential navigation

  • Local regulations, courtesy to other water users and collision regulations (Rules of the Road)

  • Safety equipment, kill-cord use, personal buoyancy and wetsuits

  • Pre-launch checks, capsize recovery theory and emergency procedures

Afternoon – Full On-Water Practical Training (Auckland Harbour)

  • Safe launching and recovery

  • Slow-speed control and confined-space manoeuvring

  • Stopping distances and high-speed control

By the end of the day you will be self-sufficient in good conditions and fully aware of your own and your craft’s limitations — exactly what the RYA and superyachts demand.
