Privacy Policy – Powerboat Captain Quiz

Powerboat.Training Limited ("we", "us", "our") built the Powerboat Captain Quiz app (the "App"). This Privacy Policy explains what information the App collects, how it is used, and your choices regarding that information.

  1. Information We Collect

1.1 Anonymous Usage Analytics

When you use the App, we collect anonymous analytics events to understand how features are used and to improve the App. Each event includes:

  • Event name (for example: "app_launch", "feature_open", "quiz_completed")

  • Feature identifier (for example: which quiz pack was played)

  • Timestamp

  • App version and build number

  • Device model identifier (for example: "iPhone15,2")

This data does not include your name, Apple ID, email address, or any other personal identifier. It is stored anonymously in Apple's CloudKit public database.

1.2 Leaderboard and Community Data

If you choose to participate in community features, the following data may be collected and shared publicly:

  • Daily Challenge Leaderboard: Your display name (chosen by you or from Game Center), quiz score, number of correct answers, completion time, and submission date. This is visible to other users on the leaderboard.

  • Community Slam Map: If you record a boating session with the Breakback Boating feature, slam events (G-force reading, speed, GPS coordinates, heading, and your chosen username) may be shared on the community map. You can remain anonymous by not setting a username, in which case "Anonymous" is displayed.

1.3 Location Data

The App uses location data for the following purposes:

  • Compass and Navigation: Real-time GPS position and heading for the compass, waypoint navigation, and speed display. This data is processed on-device and not transmitted.

  • Boating Session Recording: If you choose to record a Live Run, your GPS route is tracked and stored locally on your device. Slam event locations are shared on the community map only if you save the session.

  • Anchor Guardian: If you enable the Anchor Guardian feature, background location tracking monitors your boat's position relative to the anchor drop point. This data is processed on-device. Location data is included in drift alert notifications sent to your device.

You can control location access at any time through your device's Settings. The App requests "Always" location permission only when background features such as Anchor Guardian require it.

1.4 Motion Data

The Breakback Boating feature uses your device's accelerometer and gyroscope to measure G-forces during boating sessions. This data is processed on-device in real time. G-force readings from slam events are only transmitted if you save a session to the community map.

1.5 Game Center

If you sign in to Game Center, your Game Center display name and quiz scores may be submitted to Apple's Game Center leaderboards. This is governed by Apple's own privacy policy and Game Center terms.

1.6 Photos

The App may request access to your photo library to save your Launchmaster Captain certificate image. Photos are stored locally on your device and are never uploaded to our servers or any cloud service.

1.7 In-App Purchases

Purchase transactions are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We do not collect or store your payment information. We only store a local record of which products have been purchased to unlock content.

  1. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide app functionality: Location data powers the compass, route tracking, and anchor monitoring features. Motion data enables G-force measurement.

  • To improve the App: Anonymous analytics help us understand which features are popular and identify areas for improvement.

  • To enable community features: Leaderboard scores and community slam map data allow users to compare progress and see boating activity.

  • To send notifications: Local notifications remind you of daily challenges, quiz countdowns, and anchor drift alerts. No push notification data is sent to our servers.

  1. Data Storage and Security

  • On-device storage: Quiz progress, user preferences, session recordings, and photos are stored locally on your device using standard iOS storage mechanisms.

  • Cloud storage: Analytics events, leaderboard scores, and community slam data are stored in Apple's CloudKit public database, which is protected by Apple's infrastructure security.

  • External servers: The App fetches quiz question packs and daily tip images from our server (flanagan.tv). These are read-only content downloads. No user data is sent to this server.

  1. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties. The only data visible to other users is:

  • Leaderboard entries (display name and score) - voluntarily submitted

  • Community slam map entries (location, G-force, speed, username) - voluntarily submitted

  • Game Center leaderboard scores - governed by Apple's policies

  1. Third-Party Services

The App uses the following Apple platform services:

  • Apple CloudKit - for anonymous analytics, leaderboards, and community data

  • Apple Game Center - for global leaderboards (optional)

  • Apple StoreKit - for in-app purchases

We do not integrate any third-party advertising networks, social media SDKs, or external analytics frameworks.

  1. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

  1. Your Choices

  • Location: You can revoke location access at any time in Settings > Privacy > Location Services.

  • Motion: You can revoke motion data access in Settings > Privacy > Motion & Fitness.

  • Notifications: You can disable notifications in Settings > Notifications.

  • Game Center: You can sign out of Game Center to prevent leaderboard submissions.

  • Community features: Participation in the community slam map and daily challenge leaderboard is voluntary.

  • Photos: You can revoke photo library access in Settings > Privacy > Photos.

  1. Data Retention

Anonymous analytics data and community slam map entries are retained in CloudKit indefinitely. Daily challenge leaderboard entries are displayed on a rolling 24-hour basis. Local data on your device persists until you delete the App.

  1. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected by updating the "Effective Date" at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
